The Forensic Approach to Indoor Environmental Investigation
Anthony Denatala founded Sick Building Group LLC with a clear premise: the best mold inspector is one who first understood mold remediation. Most inspectors approach a building asking "is there mold?" Anthony approaches it asking "what moisture physics created this, where is it going, and what will it take to permanently correct it?" That difference in starting point is the difference between a report that describes symptoms and a forensic investigation that identifies causes.
After more than 20 years of hands-on crawlspace-to-attic work — including hundreds of mold remediations, encapsulations, and post-remediation clearance verifications — Anthony developed a systematic diagnostic methodology that combines building science fundamentals with advanced instrumentation: particulate counters, UV-induced fluorescence scanning, thermal imaging, and precision moisture mapping. The goal of every investigation is the same: find what others miss, understand why it exists, and document it clearly enough that a homeowner, insurance adjuster, or contractor can act on it.
"Knowing mold remediation and then understanding inspection makes a difference in investigating technique — as opposed to someone who just does inspection and testing."
— Anthony Denatala, CMRS
Anthony served in the United States Army as a 19D Cavalry Scout and 11H Anti-Tank Infantry soldier from 1993 to 1997 — an experience that instilled the disciplined, methodical approach to investigation that defines his work today. He operates Sick Building Group LLC from Kennesaw, GA, serving the Greater Atlanta metro area.
He holds the CMRS (Certified Microbial Remediation Supervisor) credential through the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC), the premier accrediting body for indoor environmental professionals. All written remediation protocols developed by Sick Building Group follow IICRC S520 standards.
Areas of Expertise
Forensic Mold Inspection
Root-cause diagnostic investigation combining physical inspection with particulate air sampling, UV fluorescence, and thermal imaging. Not a checklist — a forensic investigation.
Stack Effect & Building Science
Understanding how air moves through a building — from crawlspace to living areas to attic — is the foundation of whole-home moisture and mold investigation.
Crawlspace Moisture Control
Full encapsulation system design including vapor barrier specification, commercial dehumidifier sizing, drainage integration, and ANSI/ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation compliance.
Remediation Protocol Development
IICRC S520-standard written protocols used by insurance adjusters, attorneys, contractors, and property managers to define scope, ensure proper execution, and create defensible documentation.
ERMI & Advanced Air Testing
ERMI DNA-based testing, spore trap sampling, surface sampling, and particulate air sampling interpreted in full context — not against meaningless absolute thresholds.
Chemically Sensitive Clients
Specialized protocols for medically sensitive, immune-compromised, and environmentally injured clients who require heightened precision and documentation from inspection through clearance.
